Taliban poison attack or mass hysteria? Chaos hits another Kabul girls' schoolDozens of pupils treated in hospital as Afghan militants accused of poison attack on girls
Jon Boone in Kabul
Wed 25 Aug 2010 21.33 BST
When the order came to evacuate the Totia high school, hundreds of girls ran from their desks clutching handkerchiefs and their headscarves over their mouths. School bags were abandoned as some leapt out of the ground floor windows of their dilapidated two-storey school block rather than trying to push their way through a melee of teenage girls all rushing to get out to fresh air.
Teachers tried to organise an orderly departure but their efforts were in vain amid rising panic that the school had become the latest in Afghanistan to be hit by an apparent poison gas attack.
A total of 46 students and nine teachers were treated in hospital after what Mohammad Asif Nang, an official at the education ministry, described as "an apparent poisoning" attack by "the enemies of women's education".
According to staff, parents and onlookers, girls began fainting in the school's main classroom block at about 10.30 this morning, during the first of three daily shifts designed to triple the number of girls at the school.

Taliban Terror or Mass Hysteria: Who Is Poisoning Afghanistan’s Girls?
A recent spate of incidents in which dozens of girls have been forced from school, feeling sick, has set Afghanistan in a tizzy over what the source of the mysterious maladies may be.
By Amy Friedman July 06, 2012
On April 17, 150 girls were transported from their school in the Afghan province of Takhar to a hospital, reporting signs of dizziness, nausea and headaches.

Mass hysteria blamed for Afghan schoolgirl 'poisoning,' not the Taliban
The Afghan school girl 'poisonings' bear a striking resemblance to past cases of mass hysteria, particularly one in Palestine in 1983.
By Dan Murphy , Staff writer July 9, 2012
The Taliban have been poisoning scores of Afghan schoolgirls for attending school, right? Wrong – at least that’s the position of the World Health Organization.
Schoolgirls and teachers complaining of nausea and other symptoms have reported poisoned water supplies at at least 12 girls’ schools across Afghanistan since 2009. But there have been no fatalities, and despite extensive efforts by the UN's World Health Organization to get to the bottom of the matter no one has found proof of poison or any other organic cause.

Poisonings' at Afghan girls' schools likely mass hysteria - not Taliban, says report
Thousands of girls have been taken ill at Afghan schools in recent years, in incidents of mass fainting and vomiting.
By Ben Farmer
04 July 2012 • 4:25pm
A spate of apparent poisonings at girls' schools across Afghanistan is probably outbreaks of mass hysteria rather than a Taliban plot, according to the most comprehensive study yet of the phenomenon.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) working with the Afghan government has investigated attacks for more than three years but found "no conclusive evidence of deliberate poisoning".
Thousands of girls have been taken ill at schools in that time, in incidents of mass fainting and vomiting.
Pressure has mounted on Hamid Karzai's government to stop the apparent attacks as their frequency has increased in recent months.
