تاریخ انتشار کتاب آیات شیطانی سلمان رشدی 26 سپتامبر 1988 بود و فروش این کتاب هم همون سال 1988 تو پاکستان ممنوع شده بود، اوایل فوریه 1989 مجلس پاکستان انتشار این کتاب را محکوم کرد و از انگلیس و آمریکا خواست که توزیع این کتاب را متوقف کنند، زمان فتوای امام 13 فوریه 1989، یعنی مشخصا بعد از انتشار این خبر در رسانه های جهان بود که:

به عبارت دیگر بعد از این که در اعتراض به توزیع کتاب آیات شیطانی توسط مرکز فرهنگی سفارت آمریکا در اسلام آباد هزاران نفر از مردم پاکستان در برابر این مرکز تظاهرات کردند و در جریان این سرکوب این تظاهرات حداقل 5 نفر کشته 80 نفر زخمی شدند، فتوای امام صادر شد (وگرنه خیلی ها هم قبل و هم بعد از سلمان رشدی چرت و پرت نوشتند و می نویسند و کسی محلشون نکرده و نمیکنه!) - به همین دلیل هم این فتوا با آیه 156سوره بقره یعنی " إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ" که برای عرض تسلیت هست شروع شده بود.

إنا لله و انا الیه راجعون
به اطلاع مسلمانان غیور سراسر جهان می رسانم مؤلف کتاب «آیات شیطانی» که علیه اسلام و پیامبر و قرآن، تنظیم و چاپ و منتشر شده است، همچنین ناشرین مطلع از محتوای آن، محکوم به اعدام می باشند. از مسلمانان غیور می خواهم تا در هر نقطه که آنان را یافتند، سریعاً آنها را اعدام نمایند تا دیگر کسی جرأت نکند به مقدسات مسلمین توهین نماید و هر کس در این راه کشته شود، شهید است ان شاءالله . ضمناً اگر کسی دسترسی به مؤلف کتاب دارد ولی خود قدرت اعدام او را ندارد، او را به مردم معرفی نماید تا به جزای اعمالش برسد. والسلام علیکم و رحمة الله و برکاته.

Five people were killed and as many as 80 were reported injured today as the center of Islamabad was turned into a battlefield when several thousand Muslims marched on the American cultural center, throwing stones and demanding the death of an author and the banning of a book.
The demonstration today, the culmination of protests all over Pakistan, was provoked by the publication in the United States of ''The Satanic Verses'' by Salman Rushdie. The book was banned here last year. Last week, the Pakistani National Assembly voted unanimously to condemn the book and its author as ''derogatory to the Holy Prophet and Islamic teaching.''
Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's Justice Minister supported the condemnation, which also called on the Government to urge Britain and the United States to stop publication of the work, a fantasy that involves characters identifiable from Muslim history.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Five demonstrators were shot and killed Sunday and 80 people were seriously injured when Pakistani riot police opened fire on thousands of protesters attacking the U.S. cultural center here after a demonstration against the British novel “The Satanic Verses” turned into a rock-throwing anti-American melee.
