Procrustes the metal worker—not to be confused with Krusty the Klown—was an important figure in Greek mythology. A son of Poseidon, Procrustes was an iron smith, thief, murderer, and inn keeper. He offered hospitality to strangers passing his place on the sacred byway between Athens and Eleusis. For a price. Procrustes had a special bed that he offered to wayfarers. It was made of iron, and he liked to brag that the length of the bed was always an exact match for anyone who laid down upon it. Procrustes’ couch was, it seems, the Sleep Number Bed of its day, adjustable to fit all sleepers’ needs. Sort of. How did Procrustes manage this trick? Here’s where the modern Sleep Number has him beat. Procrustes didn’t adjust the bed; he adjusted the sleeper. Was the bed too long for the occupant? The rack would serve to stretch the corpus to fit. Bed too short? Off with the legs. And, always, Procrustes was off with the dead wayfarers’ loot. Theseus—a great hero, the founder and king of Athens, and also a son of Poseidon (the old man got around)—was legendary for the tasks he faced to achieve hero status, much like Hercules, in order to claim his Athenian crown. One of those tasks was to kill Procrustes. As Plutarch writes, Theseus overcame Procrustes "by compelling him to make his own body fit his bed, as he had been wont to do with those of strangers."

بزرگی را ملال پیری چونان حادث گشت که ملک الموت بر آستان در به نظاره نشسته و بانگ الرحیل بر بن گوش طنین انداز، بدید. چون حال بدین گونه یافت ملازمان و فرزندان بخواند که ریز و درشت را حلالیت طلبید و کس از قلم نیفتد که گر این شود، از آن وادی به سلامت گذر نتوانم. ملازمان هم که دل در گرو شیخ خود داشتند، به غایت توان هر که را آشنايي با بزرگشان داشت، به طلب مغفرت یافتند و شرح حال بگفتند و رضايت بستاندند و به پیش مرادشان عرضه داشتند. شیخ باز حال خویش آسوده نیافت که یحتمل بنده ای را خاطر از من رنجه است. پس ملازمان بخواست که دام و وحوش گرد ما هم حلالیت بستانید. اطرافیان نیز چون اوضاع شیخ به سامان ندیدند، بکردند آنچه امر کرده بود، تا به اشتر رسیدند و هرچه گفتند بر رگ لجاجت بماند و حلالیت نداد که مرا با شیخ گفتیست! شیخ هم به حال نزار به پیش اشتر رفت که ای حیوان! دانم که بر تو بار گران نهادم و به صحرا برون بردم و خار دادم و تشنه داشتم و این همه بد آن زمان بر تو روا نمودم که خود پیش سیر بخوردم و آب گوارا بنوشیدم. حال همه را می دانم و با این وصف از تو طلب مغفرت دارم و ملازمان را گویم که تا تو را عمر باقیست، اکرام کرده و در نعمت بدارند. شتر از گفته شیخ چهره در هم کشید که ای بزرگ آن که مرا آفرید، برای بار بردن و خار خوردن و صبر بر تشنگی بساخت. پس تو را بر نوشیدن و تناول طعام و بار گران بر من نهادن حرجی نیست. اما آن چه از تو بر دل دارم با تو بگویم و زان پس تو را حلال نمایم که روا نباشد کسی را قدرت یابی و عفو نکنی. شیخ چون این بدید، زبان بست و چشم بر دهان اشتر دوخت. شتر گفت روزی بر اسبی در پیش قافله می رفتی. ساربان هم با خیل اشتران از پس تو به راه بود. چندی که بگذشت، ساربان را خاری بر پای آمد و از ادامه راه باز ماند. این شد که کس بر همراهی ما نیافتی و چنین چاره کردی که افسار اشتران بر پشت الاغ بندی. ما بدین چاره تو ناچار بودیم! حال آن که ما را شان و منزلت بر پیروی ساربان بود نه دنباله روی حمار!!!
