In the summer of 1933, the Jewish Agency for Palestine, the German Zionist Federation, and the German Economics Ministry drafted a plan meant to allow German Jews emigrating to Palestine to retain some of the value of their property in Germany by purchasing German goods for the Yishuv, which would redeem them in Palestine local currency. This scheme, known as the Transfer Agreement or Ha’avarah, met the needs of all interested parties: German Jews, the German economy, and the Mandatory Government and the Yishuv in Palestine.

‘A Nazi travels to Palestine’: A swastika and Star of David on one coin The unique, juxtaposing coin, sold in a recent Israeli auction, contains the remarkable story about an unlikely friendship between two Germans—a Jew and a Nazi—and about the forgotten moment in history when it might have still been possible to save the Jews of Europe from extermination. Italy watchdog fines Apple and Samsung over software updates By Pascale Davies with Reuters • Updated: 24/10/2018 Tech giants Apple and Samsung are being fined by Italy's anti-trust watchdog following accusations software updates slowed down older smartphones, which encouraged people to purchase new phones. Apple was handed a fine of €10 million, while Samsung will have to pay €5 million. The US company was hit with the higher fine for failing to give customers clear information about how to maintain or replace its lithium batteries. The anti-trust body said in a statement that some Apple and Samsung firmware updates “had caused serious dysfunctions and reduced performance significantly, thereby accelerating the process of replacing them”. It added, the two firms had not provided clients adequate information about the impact of the new software “or any means of restoring the original functionality of the products”. What did Apple do? The statement read: "It has insistently proposed, from September 2016, to the owners of various models of iPhone 6 (6 / 6Plus and 6s / 6sPlus respectively placed on the market in the autumn of 2014 and 2015), to install the new operating system iOS 10 developed for the new iPhone7, without informing the greater energy demands of the new operating system and the possible inconveniences — such as sudden shutdowns —

Netherlands: Samsung fined €39 million 'for influencing TV prices' By Euronews with AP • Updated: 29/09/2021 The Dutch consumer watchdog has fined Samsung more than €39 million for influencing the online prices of television sets. The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) announced the fine on Wednesday for the Benelux arm of the South Korean electronics giant. The company had tried to influence prices of new models of television sets that usually drop quickly after they were introduced to the market, the authority said in a statement. "Samsung exerted undue influence on the online sales prices of televisions of seven retailers from January 2013 to December 2018." "Under the guise of 'price recommendations', Samsung ensured that the retailers raised their prices to the market price desired by Samsung," added ACM chairman Martijn Snoep. "Samsung's conduct distorted competition at the retail level and led to higher prices for consumers." The watchdog said it seized evidence of WhatsApp chats and emails during early morning raids. Samsung said in a written reaction that it would appeal the fine. "We are disappointed with the ACM's decision, as we believe that Samsung Electronics Benelux ... did not violate competition laws in the Dutch TV market as alleged by the ACM," the company said.

Google fined €220m by French competition watchdog over online advertising market By Euronews • Updated: 04/10/2021 Google has been fined €220 million by France's competition authority for favouring its own services in online advertising. The tech giant was found to have given "preferential treatment" to Google's own "proprietary technologies" in digital adverts, the authority said. Google has not contested the facts and the fine was agreed as part of a settlement procedure, it added. The company also said it had agreed with the French watchdog on a number of solutions to improve its online advertising market. In a blog post, Google said that changes would be made over the coming months, and would eventually be rolled out globally. Google maintains a dominant position in the online advertising market and is facing antitrust lawsuits from authorities in several countries. What was the French complaint about? The case against Google over its online advertising market was first brought by three media organisations; News Corp, the Le Figaro group and the Rossel La Voix group. Le Figaro later withdrew from the procedure. The companies had complained that Google was promoting its own services under the brand name Google Ad Manager. The decision was referred to France's competition authority, which confirmed in a statement that Google had agreed to the €220 million fine. Goog

Russian competition authority fines Apple €10 million for alleged abuse of market By Euronews with AFP • Updated: 19/07/2021 Russia's competition watchdog has fined Apple a record €10 million for alleged abuse of its dominant market dominance. Apple's distribution of mobile applications through its iOS operating system had given its own products a competitive advantage, Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) said. The authority confirmed in a statement that they had fined Apple over 900 million rubles (€10 million) in the case. It follows a complaint made by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky in 2019, who accused Apple of blocking access to their parental control app "Safe Kids" while developing their own similar product. Related•Ethereum jumps to record high after reports the EIB will issue digital bonds "From our perspective, Apple appears to be using its position as the owner of the platform," Kaspersky had said in a statement. "[Apple is] dictating terms and preventing other developers from operating on an equal footing," they added. According to the FAS, Apple had carried out "a number of sequential actions" which had given the company's products unfair "competitive advantages" over others. "The provisions of Apple's documentation contained unrestricted discretion ... which could lead to a restriction of competition in related markets," the authority added.
